Buffalo-Boston Backyard Challenge on Facebook!
When you think Buffalo three thoughts immediately pop into your head: snow, hockey and backyard ice rinks. When you think of Boston, where our friends at backyard-hockey.com are located, the one thought that will pop into a Buffalonian’s head would be Milan Lucic truck-sticking Ryan Miller last year.
While our Facebook page (facebook.com/backyardclassic) is flooded with thoughts from Sabres fans after each game, backyard-hockey.com focuses on bringing hockey back to its roots and spreading news of pond and outdoor hockey tournaments throughout the nation, including the Tim Hortons Backyard Classic! Features run on their Facebook page also include ice rink construction and maintenance tips that can benefit even the most seasoned backyard ice-rink master.
Now onto the concept of our bet! The Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins rivalry in my 19 years of existence has evolved greatly. Previously, the Sabres had been bitter rivals with our neighbors across the border in Toronto, but this has shifted away from Toronto and over the past couple years to Boston. Oh the hate is definitely there as Chara and Lucic are reigning champs of receiving the Boo Birds in the FN Center. The Sabres have evolved their roster to adapt to playing Boston by adding grinders such as John Scott, Adam Pardy and Steve Ott to counter the physicality of Boston.
Today starts a new battle which will add onto the bitter rivalry of Sabres/Bruins as we announce the Buffalo/Boston Backyard Challenge. Conceived before the season got underway, the challenge is simple. The Bruins and Sabres play 4 more times this year (Feb. 10, Feb. 15, Mar. 31, Apr. 17). If the Sabres win more head-to-head matchups, we win! If the Bruins win 3 of those remaining games, they win. In the case of a tie, we'll go to overall points at the end of the regular season.
Now, for the fun part! Up for grabs is a one-week rental of the other page's Facebook cover photo. For those who aren't on Facebook, the cover photo is the 851px wide by 315px tall image that adorns the top of each page. Right now, our cover photo is his event logo over a picture of tournament action. The backyard-hockey.com cover photo is of our sponsored rink sign at last week's New England Pond Hockey Classic. But on April 27th, lasting until May 3rd, one of those images will change! The winner of the Challenge will have the opportunity to create a cover photo for the other’s Facebook page and disgrace the culture of that particular city’s hockey fan base.
Let me finish by saying I’m not sure why we accepted the terms of this bet as the Sabres are anchoring the bottom of the Northeast Division with the Bruins on top, but with plenty of time left in the young, lockout shortened season the tides can certainly change (and will)!
